Nuclear Powerplant Visit
Time
Year 1
Location
Mochovce
Learning Outcomes
6, 7
One of the experiences from Year one of my IB course that stuck with me, was definately the visit to a slovak nuclear powerplant. A segment has been constructed for tours to go through and learn about nuclear enrgy, many of it's importances and myths about it, the importance of green energy, and a lot of other things.
This was done as a Science classroom expedition, meaning our chemistry, biology, and physics teachers were present to connect what we learned in th classroom to what we experienced there. The reason it stuck with me so much is because of how it invoked you to think about what is being shown. You are being asked to think about the future, about how it will be if we don't turn away from fossil fuels.
I personally also find the mechanisms of nuclear energy gathering to be incredibly fascinating, I remember asking my chemistry teacher about the details and intricacies of much that was being said, and I think it really expanded my knowledge of chemistry and nuclear power generation. For example, I did not know prior to the excursion how nuclear fission actually worked, and understanding it greatly expands your chemistry understanding and knowledge.
The goal of this trip for me was to learn, even if I didn't think I would learn much at first. This goal was certainly achieved, since the trip helped me not only understand much more, but also realize how much I don't yet understand about the world.
